Biography

My mission is to express, via my paintings, my relationship to my subjects using line and colour. This can result in colourful paintings of the natural world expressing my love of the countryside and it's beauty. At other times my subjects are vehicles for expression in relation to social and political issues, things that matter to me. My vision is to create ambiguity and uncertainty in my use of perspective, tending to paint using either flat or multiple perspective. My key influences are expressionist and fauvist. Some of my work uses symbolic representation and my hope is that my paintings speak to people at a number of levels.

inspiration

My inspiration largely comes from within. How I feel affects what I choose to paint and how I paint it. Without doubt, a walk in the hills or along a river, triggers all sorts of potential visual images for me, invariably infused with bright colour. At other times, world events or indeed personal experiences inspire me in a different and more serious way. Sometimes my paintings, for example, my abstracted landscapes, can be an amalgam of the these two central tenets in my work.

medium

I paint in oils. I love the texture of oil paint and use both brush and scrapers to exploit that potential. I tend to use big brushes in the initial phases of my work, and my goal is to be expressionist in my use of brush strokes. I tend to leave small brushwork, if used, to the final stages of my work. I sometimes use scrapers to reveal elements of my underpainting to exploit serendipity and ambiguity. I use both transparent and opaque paint to create visual interest, leaving any impasto work to the final stages of my painting
