Biography

I see myself as an expressionist and use line and colour to express my emotional response to my subjects. My work is also influenced by cubism and I like to use both flat and multiple perspective. At times I use symbols to illustrate narratives and my hope is that my work speaks to people at both a conscious and unconscious level.

inspiration

My inspiration comes largely from within. How I feel affects what I choose to paint and how I paint it. I can be inspired by external experience, for example the natural world, a still life or indeed world events. How I feel about those subjects affects my artistic response.

medium

I paint in oil. I love the texture of oil paint and use both brush and scraper to exploit that potential. I use big brushes and thin washes of translucent paint to initiate a painting, and tend to leave small brush work, if used, to the final stages of the painting. I use both translucent and opaque paint to create visual interest, leaving any impasto work to the final stages of the painting.
