Biography

Sarah D. Smith’s work across jewellery, photography, and image-based objects is rooted in encouraging people to slow down and truly notice the beauty, colour, and detail of the natural world around them.
In an increasingly fast-paced and stressful environment, she believes that even a few quiet moments spent observing nature — walking in a park, sitting in a garden, or by the sea — can become a form of gentle meditation and reconnection.
Her gemstone jewellery and nature-inspired pieces are designed to draw the eye, lift the spirit, and evoke emotional responses, whether that is a sense of calm, joy, or the triggering of personal memories. Through colour, texture, and small-scale detail, Sarah aims to create work that feels both uplifting and enduring — objects to be worn, lived with, and treasured over time.

inspiration

The natural world is the primary inspiration for Sarah’s work. Trained as a goldsmith, she has a strong sensitivity to small scale, fine detail, and craftsmanship, which is reflected across both her jewellery and photographic work.
Colour plays a central role, particularly through her use of gemstones. Sarah is drawn to the enormous variety of gems and minerals that are often overlooked in mainstream jewellery, combining them in rich, sometimes unexpected colour palettes.
Alongside her jewellery practice, Sarah photographs close-up details in nature — lichens, rock pool formations, weathered surfaces — focusing on pattern, texture, and colour. These images inform not only her jewellery designs but also a broader body of work including collages, prints, and functional pieces, creating a cohesive and recognisable visual language across her practice.

medium

Sarah works primarily in precious metals, semi-precious and precious gemstones, and pearls. Many of her gemstones are specially cut and drilled by trusted suppliers in India, allowing her to work with unusual materials that are highly sensitive to heat.
To protect these stones, she frequently employs fine pin and wire-work techniques, minimising the need for soldering with stones in place. This approach allows her to maintain both structural integrity and delicacy within her designs.
Colour is fundamental to her work, used in varied ways — from subtle graduated tones within a single gemstone type to exuberant combinations of multiple stones. She often contrasts oxidised and polished metals to enhance depth and visual interest, resulting in jewellery that balances craftsmanship, colour, and an organic sense of movement inspired by nature.
