Biography
I am lucky enough to have turned my passion into a career. There is nothing better than experimenting with photographic techniques and exploring creative avenues for fun and to inspire me in my work. Having started out working as a lighting gaffer, I use multiple light sources to create movement and power in dynamic images and have built up a reputation over 35 years as a creative director, photographer and lighting director working across multiple genres.
I have spent my career redefining how real people and human stories can be represented through creative imagery and content, visually capturing contrasts and seen/unseen elements. Working globally for international brands as well as personal exhibitions, I have pushed boundaries around how disability and health are widely perceived, specialising in storytelling through high impact photography My passion is creating authentic, thought-provoking or even occasionally humorous visual campaigns which seek to challenge and surprise the viewer.
inspiration
My personal artistic projects are always driven by juxtaposing and exploring imagery to show contrasts and alternative viewpoints. This began with photographing Olympians and Paralympians back in 2009 culminating in over 250 portraits of the GB Paralympic team for national exhibitions and the publication of my award winning book "Power and Movement”. I wanted to challenge traditional perceptions of disability, fitness and power to give an insight into the skill, poise and strength of elite Paralympians as they prepared for the challenge of competing.
I further developed this concept of contrasts through exhibitions exploring hidden influences (“Sway”) and bringing to life the hidden stories of Chronic Kidney Disease (”Survivors: Life Unfiltered”).
“Follow the Herd” is my latest project bringing to life the power and dynamism of horses and adding some humour into the mundanity of daily life (including working with 2 sheepdogs, 1 handler and 2 shepherds….)
medium
All my work starts as original photography and is then printed on various mediums. All images are unique and are lit meticulously to show every detail.
There is no such thing as a typical shoot. Whether on film or digitally, I work hard to capture elements that challenge the status quo, often using unique lighting techniques and elaborate set builds.
My unique use of movement and lighting produces stills photography that is able to “stretch” a moment in time, producing images that are often timeless, imaginative, and fun.
