Biography
Nessa makes both functional and decorative ceramic pieces from stoneware clay. She has a particular interest in glazes, how they interact with each other, and how they interact with ash deposits from firing in wood kilns. Her work sits on the border between art and craft and she sees her functional pieces, such as mugs, as a way to interact with art in a very tactile, humble and frequent way.
inspiration
Nessa is inspired by the natural world, the animals, trees and the land itself which comes out in illustrative motifs on the surface of pieces.She is also fascinated, in a more abstract way, by the process of wood firing, when the flame painting and ash marking of the wood firing process inscribes surfaces with the story of their journey through the kiln.
medium
Nessa uses stoneware clay to create her pieces, which are mostly thrown on the wheel. she fires in both electric and wood fired kilns, favouring traditional Japanese glaze recipes and ash based glazes for her wood fired work, and a pallette of blues and browns in her electric fired pieces. She makes her glazes from scratch.
