Biography
Louisa makes a range of functional pieces in recycled hand-blown lead crystal which she hopes will bring joy to people every day. Not things to save for best, but pieces to enjoy using and seeing around the home. She feels there’s something intrinsically pleasing about holding an object which carries within it a spirit of authenticity, individuality and craftsmanship. She is based in Leicestershire.
inspiration
Louisa's design ethic could be described as Scandinavian, preferring simple elegant shapes, in a palette of natural colours inspired by the places she loves to be, such as forests and mountains. She works with the fluidity of molten glass to create pieces which are both tactile and ergonomic.
medium
I love the fluidity of hot glass, especially lead crystal, it’s a very graceful material.
Glassblowing is a craft unlike any other - the material changes state during the making of a piece which is quite mind-blowing when you think about it. You start with a molten liquid, and by the end of making, that liquid has cooled to become solid. A combination of heat, breath, hand tools, gravity and centrifugal force are used to form a piece.
The other unique aspect of working with hot glass is that you can’t actually touch the material you are shaping. It takes many hours of practice to begin to feel in control of this magical process.
