Biography

Liisa Clark is deeply inspired by the natural world and is particularly drawn to creatures often considered undesirable or unattractive. Her work celebrates these overlooked forms of life, recognising that every creature, regardless of size or perceived beauty, plays a vital role within the natural world.
Through painting, she seeks to reveal the quiet beauty and character of these animals, encouraging viewers to see them with fresh eyes and a renewed sense of respect. By doing so, her work highlights the interconnected and interdependent nature of all living things.
Liisa Clark’s practice is rooted in the belief that humans have become increasingly disconnected from nature. By focusing on intimate encounters with animals and natural forms, she aims to evoke a sense of familiarity and memory, transporting the viewer to a calmer, simpler moment, one that reconnects them with the natural world in an increasingly chaotic and technology driven society.

inspiration

Much of Liisa Clark’s work has been inspired by corvids and the long-standing cultural perception of these birds as symbols of doom or ill omen. Rather than reinforcing this narrative, her work seeks to offer an alternative perspective, highlighting their intelligence, beauty, and presence within the natural world.
This interest has naturally expanded to other creatures that are often viewed negatively or overlooked. Liisa draws inspiration from the belief that every living thing has a role within the natural cycle of life, regardless of how it is perceived.
More recently, her practice has evolved to include painting on reclaimed and vintage materials such as antique saws and Victorian mirrors. By combining natural imagery with discarded industrial objects, she explores the idea that nature continues to exist alongside human intervention, revealing beauty, purpose, and renewal within materials that might otherwise be forgotten.

medium

Liisa Clark works across drawing and painting, using a range of media including graphite, coloured pencil, pastel, acrylic, and oil. Her choice of medium is guided by the marks, texture, and the atmosphere she wishes to achieve, allowing each material to support the subject matter and emotional tone of the work.
While she values versatility, her practice has increasingly focused on oil and acrylic paint due to their expressive and organic nature, allowing her to work intuitively. These qualities allow her to work intuitively, building depth, movement, and character within her paintings.
This approach has also led her to explore painting on a variety of surfaces, not focusing solely on canvas but including reclaimed vintage materials. Working across different materials encourages a responsive process, where the behaviour of each surface informs the final outcome, resulting in artworks that feel tactile, considered, and closely connected to both subject and material.
