IN THE WOODS

HORSES OF SAN MARCO

RED ROAD
Biography
My mission is to use my natural spontaneous way of working but within an ongoing structure so that I can maintain and develop my art. Experimenting with composition, drawing and studying the work of other artists is part of this input and structure. I am seeking as focussed form of expression as possible and a deeper energy and truth through subjects I am passionate about such as nature and horses or simply just shapes, textures and colours
This can mean working in a very abstract way, even in the field of equestrian art, where figurative approach is often the norm.
inspiration
My love of horses is a major inspiration. Their energy and beauty touches my emotions and raw creativity, and drives me to express my energy through drawing and painting. I draw from feeling and imagination and enjoy the tactile experience of materials such as paper, ink and charcoal. My subject matter in paint is the stillness of horses resting or communicating in their natural environment. I do believe that horses speak directly to us in spiritual terms, and I want to convey that sense of mystery.
I am inspired by classical artists such as Leonardo da Vinci and Degas, and more recent artists such as Ivon Hitchens, Sandra Blow and Liz Hough.
medium
I prefer media that are flowing and “instant”. If working on fabric my preference is for dye slightly thickened to give a vivid and translucent effect. I often mix the colours on the fabric.
When drawing I love working with willow charcoal which is very versatile in the range of tones and textures it can create. I will sometimes introduce ink and monochrome acrylic paint into my drawings, particularly when I am building a drawing in layers or when I want a strong hit of deep black.
My favourite paint medium is acrylic paint, because of its versatility and ease of use. Again I often work in layers to experiment with glazes and overlays and textures.
