Handmade Driftwood Houses Sculpture
Biography
Salty Seas has always had the belief that connecting with like minded souls who are passionate about the Great British coast, not only helps promote our amazing coastal heritage but also through our art, be seen as a wealth of knowledge and inspiration. Using years of research and gathered experiences, we will continue to create original inspiring designs that evoke those special memories and nostalgia to help those stories continue for future generations.
inspiration
We are so fortunate to have such a stunning coastline within easy reach, that never fails to excite and inspire Davids creations. Not just foraging for Driftwood but the sound of the seas ebb and flow across a shingle beach, the smells of the salty air and the briny mist on your face. From sunrise to sunset casting shadows from piers, beach huts and shipping boats to taking photographs of rusting shackles, lobster pots or buildings faded and battered by the brisk salty air. At the coast you are literally surrounded by so much that assaults your senses that you cannot fail to be inspired.
medium
The process of gathering and repurposing the driftwood I find along the coast allows me to incorporate a sense of nature and the seaside into my art.
Using driftwood has an amazing tactile quality and natural texture that is inspirational to mould into physical snapshots of favourite coastal villages, harbours and remote outcrops. Every piece is carefully chosen for its natural appearance and used as found, which challenges you to find how it speaks to you as a potential finished sculpture. Some pieces have an ethereal texture which mimics the cascading waves or a weathered cliff face and its satisfying to bring that natural effect to the fore.
