Biography
Hi, I’m Claire, the maker behind the name Clay Safari. I spend my time lovingly crafting homeware and accessories from sticky lumps of clay! With a love of nature, colour and pattern, my mission is to create ceramics which highlight the world’s natural beauty. Beauty that can be found in animals and culture around the world. I aim to create joy through a combination of interesting shapes, bold colour, cultural patterns and illustrative designs.
inspiration
My pieces are primarily inspired by the animal kingdom, culture and pattern. For instance, recently my work has been heavily influenced by African textiles and big cats. Each item has a playful character- think trinket boxes with a lemur or zebra head handle, sculpted snake pendants and vases patterned with little 3-D elephants and traditional Ankara patterns.
medium
I enjoy making both functional and more decorative pieces, using a combination of hand building and slip casting techniques. Products I make include- vases, jugs, jewellery, trinket boxes, tableware, garden decor and sculptural art pieces. With a background in graphic design and illustration, my glaze designs are colourful and playful.
