Biography

Francis Underwater is a sculptor and artist working in clay and ceramics. His figurative work bridges art and functionality, ranging from detailed sculptural wall art to hand-sculpted decorative portrait vases and character mugs. Each piece is one-of-a-kind, showcasing his quirky, playful, and unusual style.

His vision is to create work that has its own life and distinct character - pieces that people can connect with and fall in love with. He aims to make art and homeware that brings small moments of fun, joy, colour and curiosity whilst celebrating the unusual, the whimsical, and the sometimes weird.

inspiration

His practice centres on figurative sculpture, driven by a lifelong fascination with people and faces. He originally studied Film Production at university, specialising in screenwriting, and while the transition to sculpture may seem unusual, it has always felt entirely natural to him. His work has always been about characters... only now, instead of writing them on paper, he brings them to life in clay.

medium

Francis works primarily in clay and ceramics, using hand-building techniques to create one-of-a-kind figurative sculptures and functional homeware. The material allows him to capture gesture, expression, and subtle details, bringing characters to life with texture and form. Working directly with clay gives a tactile, immediate connection to each piece, enabling playful experimentation and spontaneity while maintaining craftsmanship.
