Biography

My mission is to see a variety of individuals encountering my work in different and diverse settings, giving them time to observe and take away what they see in it and allowing for individual interpretation. Links to specific landscapes in the work mean there are also personal links to the work and certain places. I want the abstract nature of the work to give people an opportunity to see it in different ways, either looking for a deeper meaning or just simply appreciating the process, materials, textures, colours and movement.

My vision is for my work to bring colour and light to homes within and beyond the local area. Sparking creativity in people of all ages and encouraging self-expression. I see the paintings as a piece of the natural landscape and would love for people to have a piece of our beautiful natural landscape inside their homes.

inspiration

The inspiration for my work originated with the Cornish landscape. I studied painting in Falmouth and investigated the processes within the landscape in my work. During this time my work was influenced by natural materials, the ongoing processes within our natural landscape and the surrounding rugged textures of the landscape. I studied this alongside an exploration of colour, abstraction and movement.

In recent years my work has taken inspiration from various surroundings, such as the chaos and energy found in life in London and the peace and calm found in Norway. A recent trip to Norway allowed for new natural influences in my work. I found creativity in the dramatic and overwhelming landscape full of mountains, water, ridges and lines. This has allowed me to introduce new shapes and structures into my compositions and was an opportunity to portray a new immense landscape.

medium

I create experimental mixed media paintings, where I mix traditional art materials with unconventional, natural and found materials. To build texture and marks within my work I layer materials such as sand, plaster and burnt wood with acrylic paint, oil bars, oil pastels, charcoal and graphite.

I have also created 3D forms such as a series of clay twisted figures, which were then drawn from to create forms and shapes within my work and displayed alongside 2D artworks. Printmaking also plays an important role in my work, inspiring larger paintings and acting as outcomes in its own right. Screen prints, collograph prints and cyanotypes are an opportunity to test new textures and compositions and portray my surroundings differently. Teaching Art full-time also allows for experimentation with new materials in a different context.
