Rugged Nature

Cornish Tin Mine
Biography
My mission as an artist is to connect myself and viewers to nature, bringing my love for the coast and countryside into my ceramic practice. I aim to bring the sense of calm and well-being I get from nature into people’s homes.
As I develop my work and explore different forms, my connection to nature remains. My practice's future vision is to experiment with new ways of incorporating nature into my ceramics. In the future, I will play with other found objects from the surrounding Warwickshire countryside, using natural textures and patterns from tree bark, foliage, etc., and pressing and imprinting directly onto the clay.
inspiration
I am a ceramicist inspired by the natural world. I love the textures and tones of nature's erosion and corrosion. I am particularly interested in the seashore and coastal landscapes, as well as rock formations and old tree trunks. I use heavily grogged clay to create the aged surfaces. Washed-back oxides and slips together with glazes create the look of peeling paint, corrosion and decay. The old tin mines of Cornwall have recently inspired me, and I have created work depicting these.
medium
Ceramic pieces, handbuilt using crank clay, found and foraged objects such as tree bark are imprinted onto the surface of the crank to create textures. Before firing, I experiment with various oxides and glazes, adding additional layers of texture to the final works.
