Biography
Hi, I’m Kase, aka the Caffeinated Hippo. I focus on the concept of interactive art and the belief that anything can be seen in a new light (pun unintended). I aim to portray the balance between light and dark, order and chaos or happiness and sadness, and how they are reflected in everyday life. My paintings contain subtle shapes and motifs that glow-in-the-dark. I love seeing people's reactions and surprise as a glowing bunny, penguin or fairy lights appear on the canvases. Often, people say sheepishly "I'm buying this for myself, not my child" as if it's shameful to want to buy a glow-in-the-dark painting but get truly excited when it’s wrapped up for them to take home. Everyone has that inner child in them and I'm so glad when I get to connect with them.
inspiration
My Baa (Grandma) will remain one of my constant inspirations. We sadly lost her to Alzheimer’s and Vascular Dementia a few years ago but art was a staple throughout our relationship. Throughout my childhood, I created artwork alongside her on her dining room table and this continued into the later stages of her illness when she was no longer able to communicate verbally. We found that it connected us both, but it also connected us to our inner child. We were full of curiosity and joy when we were painting. I felt the same way when I discovered Akasha Mead and Alpay Efe. They paint in such a playful and visceral way that it feels therapeutic. My artistic style is somewhat similar, as for me art is about processing life, emotions and documenting them.
medium
I predominantly use acrylic paint for my paintings as well as the subtle additions using a glow-in-the-dark medium mainly due to its fast drying properties. I love to leave my underlayer exposed in certain areas whilst other parts are re-edited and layered. This can be challenging to do with mediums other than acrylic. I tend to set a timer for my work too, anything from 30 minutes to 6 hours depending on the size of the piece (similar to Belgian artist, Luc Tuymans). I don’t like to edit my paintings
