Biography

Karoline is an illustrator and printmaker who has specialised in screen printing for over ten years. Her work is characterised by bold outlines, pattern and bright colours so it is ideal for the technique of screen printing. Karoline enjoys working by hand to create joyful, vibrant screen prints. She also prints a range of colorful greetings cards and recycled card decorations.

Karoline is a member of Leicester Print Workshop and she delivers screen printing workshops for different organisations including Leicester Print Workshop, The Royal Birmingham Society of Artists and Winterbourne House in Birmingham.

inspiration

Karoline is inspired by screen printing and she loves working with layers of flat, bold colour to create her prints. She is also interested in folk art, craft and costumes from around the world and eastern Europe in particular. Soviet bloc graphic design and illustration have been an influence on her work since she travelled to Russia in the early 1990s. Her cards and prints are inspired by ephemera and toys including vintage Bulgarian stamps, traditional Polish paper cuts and old Russian tin toys.

medium

First Karoline draws the artwork by hand and then she makes the separate layers for each different colour. Using either photo stencils or simple paper stencils, Karoline carefully screen prints each different layer of colour to create her finished prints. She produces most of her work in small, limited editions.

Karoline also prints a range of greetings cards on FSC recycled card and prints her bold designs onto recycled cotton tote bags. She works with recyclable materials when ever possible as well as using biodegradable packaging for her cards, prints and decorations.
