Biography
Emma-Jane Rule is a Contemporary Metalsmith and award-winning Silversmith with a workshop at StudionAme in Leicester, where she also offers small-scale decorative metalworking classes. She currently teaches her signature technique of foldforming at venues in Leicester and London, helping to pass skills on so that others can also experience the joy of metalsmithing.
Creating hand-made and quality designs, using techniques and processes passed through generations, is a joyful way to work and Emma-Jane aspires to create beautiful metal art pieces to adorn contemporary interiors.
inspiration
Taking inspiration from the rhythms and patterns found in nature: From plant-life, coastlines and beaches, trees and wild landscapes. Emma-Jane then interprets this natural energy and beauty of form into sculptural metal designs.
As a material and process driven maker, she intuitively forms the metal using hammers and tools and allows the forms to evolve organically, meaning every piece made is unique. Whether the piece is functional or decorative they are to be enjoyed everyday, as well as being treasured heirlooms for the future.
medium
Working in base metals of copper, brass and gilding metal as well as the precious metal silver, Emma-Jane Rule’s creative portfolio includes decorative and functional vessels and sculptures, wall art, lighting and jewellery.
Her handcrafted metalwork is created using traditional silversmithing skills as well as a contemporary technique called foldforming. Foldforming involves folding metal and then strategically hammering certain areas, which curves and stretches the flat metal into the designed form. This two-dimensional metal is then opened out and manipulated into unique three-dimensional forms. The resulting designs are treated with rustic patinas and finished with burnished accents, which accentuates the hammered marks of the making process.
