Biography
I aim to highlight and draw attention to the beauty and value of nature. I love to draw attention to little details, to the beauty in the ordinary, that can easily be overlooked in the fast pace of life.
Additionally, after going on a foraging course, I have also become interested in the edible and medicinal properties of the plants around me, particularly those commonly thought of as weeds. I would like to highlight the value of these plants through my art and make my art informative, inspiring others to take an interest in their local flora.
Making my art also helps me find awe and joy in the world around me and I create as an act of worship to God, the creator of all things. I hope I can give other people some of that joy through my artwork.
inspiration
I have always been fascinated by the shapes, colours, and textures in nature and take great joy in capturing the, sometimes overlooked, beauty in the world around me. I never tire of finding wonder in the micro and macro design or God’s creation.
My concern for environmental issues also directs some of my work, wanting to highlight the importance of nature to mankind and the planet. While my fascination with foraging and learning about the amazing properties of plants all around us also influences my work.
Going on a walk with me can take twice as long, as I’m stopping constantly either to take photos of something that’s caught my eye, collect plants to press for use in my art, or look up what a plant is and whether it is edible.
medium
I specialise in a historic photographic process called Cyanotype, which produces blue-toned images. I use a mixture of photo negatives and pressed flowers to create my artworks, also including text in some pieces. Using sunlight or a UV lightbox I can create beautifully simple pieces or complex, multi-layered artworks, all in rich shades of blue. I have been using this process for 8 years and I am still finding new ideas and techniques for creating artworks and still love the magic of watching the image develop when washed after being exposed to light.
I mainly work on paper but also experiment with fabric, wood and glass as well and play with ideas for 3D work.
