Horsehair, Saggar fired and Obvara Raku vases

Obvara vase

Horsehair vase
Biography
I am reinterpreting the work of ancient potters to create something functional, beautiful and using natural organic techniques of surface decoration
inspiration
As a former archaeologist my passion for ceramics was first ignited by excavating the pots of ancient potters and I like to connect with them by using techniques such as burnishing and horsehair, saggar firing and Obvara Raku processes to create beautiful, natural surfaces.
medium
I use stoneware clay and burnish each piece by hand to create a soft surface sheen before Bisc firing. I then fire the pieces again in a Raku kiln and use horse hair, sugar and feathers, Obvara and Saggar firing processes to create surfaces that are reminiscent of stone and marble.
