Biography

My mission as a ceramic artist is to create hand-built ceramics that celebrate the unique tactility of clay, inviting people to engage with both the visual and physical qualities of every piece. Through careful hand-building techniques, I explore the subtle interplay between form and surface, preserving the fingerprint of the maker in every contour. Handles are squeezed directly from my own hand imprints, forging a direct and tangible connection between maker and user. Elegance is central to my practice; I strive for purposeful forms defined by graceful lines, refined proportions, and quiet sophistication that elevates the everyday. Alongside this aesthetic pursuit, I am deeply committed to durability, ensuring that each work is robust and lasting, able to withstand daily use. My ceramics are designed not only to be admired, but to be cherished and handled, fostering connections that blend artistry and utility in daily life.

inspiration

The use of blue and white in ceramics is deeply rooted in both tradition and personal expression. My colour palette features vivid blues, bright turquoise, and blacks (in raku) set against pure white, which unconsciously evoke images of hot coastal shores. This colour combination not only references the timelessness associated with historical blue-and-white ceramics but also brings a contemporary vibrancy that connects to sunlit, coastal environments. The pure white porcelain stoneware serves as a canvas for these bold colours, creating a sense of freshness and clarity.
My latest sculptural vessels and wall pieces have explored spiral textures looking at sacred geometry and the golden ratio. The spiral is one of Earth’s most ancient of symbols, representing the infinite motion of the universe and the continuous changing and evolving journey of life.

medium

As a ceramic artist I find the greatest connection with clay through hand building, from shaping flat sheets of clay into elegant functional ware, to coiling and pinching clay into sculptural vessels, wall pieces, or jewellery.
My functional ware is made from rolled out slabs of porcelain white stoneware clay shaped by hand. The gently curved unglazed bases are then finely sanded until sea pebble smooth, creating an addictively tactile surface to hold.
My sculptural vessels are coil built, with textures which use light and shade to create surface interest alongside splashes of colour.
Wall pieces have been formed using hand rolled tiles pieced together in mosaic nautilus inspired patterns, mounted on boards and framed.
