Biography

In my functional ware I strive to find balance between perfection and the wonderfully human imperfections of hand made pieces. They are embellished with squeezed handles that connect the maker to the user in a tangible handhold, then finished with curved, raw, polished, addictively tactile undersides. The functionality always underpins my work and the desire for pieces to be held and used in everyday life.
I enjoy using my sculptural vessels to explore a freer way of making. I explore different textures which use light and shade to create surface interest alongside splashes of colour and lustres. I also love using different firing methods alongside electric such as gas, raku, and wood.
I’m constantly evolving as a ceramic artist and feel the horizons of discovery are limitless.

inspiration

My inspiration comes from various sources depending on what I’m working on. My functional ware has taken a contemporary look at clean white ceramics with hand embellished patterns. I’ve drawn from cobalt blue and white historical ceramics and also from the natural world I see outside my studio (peacocks passing by in my rural village).
I like to use different techniques from bubbling, slip trailing, spattering and sponge printing to make expressive and vibrant marks and patterns that contrast with the white canvas of the clay.
My sculptural vessels have evolved from similar origins but are exploring more textural elements involving spirals, one of the most ancient symbols representing the infinite motion of the universe and life’s journey.

medium

I am a ceramic artist who finds the greatest connection with clay through hand building. From delicate slab built functional ware made from porcelain white stoneware to pinch pot and coil built sculptural raku vessels, and porcelain jewellery.
