Of All the Flowers in the World

My Boat

Kenilworth Castle on Slate
Biography
My mission as an artist seems to centre on celebrating the profound beauty of the everyday, transforming ordinary moments into something ethereal and deeply expressive. By using elements like ‘kitchen sink school’, I’m grounding my art in the real, the tangible, while still allowing space for the elemental and emotional. It’s about blending humour with pathos—creating a dialogue between the ordinary and the extraordinary.
My vision is to invite viewers into a world where the mundane is imbued with romanticism, loneliness, and drama, often exaggerated for effect. This contrast encourages conversation, not just about the art itself, but about the human condition, relationships and the hidden stories behind everyday life. It’s a way of connecting deeply with others through shared experience, offering both a reflection and a space for emotional release.
inspiration
My inspiration as an artist is rooted in the simplicity and quietude of everyday life, drawing from the subtle beauty found in people, nature and light. There’s an appreciation for the gentle moments that often go unnoticed—like the stillness of a room or the soft glows of local light or the familiarity of the a46! This sensitivity to the nuances of solitude and human connection speaks to a deep understanding of both the external world and the inner emotional landscape.
Edward Hopper’s exploration of loneliness and isolation in his scenes of empty spaces and quiet, introspective figures resonates with my vision, as does Georgia O’Keeffe’s ability to evoke grandeur in the simplest elements of nature. The way both artists infuse their work with a sense of profound stillness and emotive power likely influences your own practice, shaping your ability to tell stories through visual simplicity while maintaining a sense of depth and emotional complexity.
medium
I am a mixed media artist. I love painting and drawing. I am forever taking photos of scenes that inspire me. I also enjoy printmaking, particularly the gentle process of cyanotype. I like experimenting with different substances with paint like sand, salt and thibgs found in the kitchen cupboard!
My current favourite medium is pastel, both soft and oil pastels. The combination between soft pastel and sharpie pen being a current favourite! I love the use of colour and colour theory in my work.
