Biography

Mission

Paintings of flora and fauna showing a version of nature reimagined and translated into highly stylised watercolours, all brought together with a limited colour palette with highlights of gold and silver. I hope to pay tribute to the beauty in the natural world and help in some way for us reconnect with nature.

inspiration

Inspiration

My inspiration comes from the landscapes of my native Scotland to the ancient Meadows of England and all the gardens, parks, wastelands and pavements in-between. While I portray nature and wildlife in my paintings, there is a strong design element to my work and I have a deep desire to produce pattern and take my influences from Moorish, Celtic and Art-Nouveau sources, which when used with the stylised subject of my painting produces a unique piece of art.

medium

Medium

My process starts with rough sketches in my sketch book to work out composition and placements. Using mainly watercolours to produce my work, I find it a very versatile medium. I love that it can be used to produce anything from a light and translucent atmosphere to a dark and brooding atmosphere and can produce bright jewel like colours when required. The watercolour is applied layer by layer and washes where required. The use of golden silver in my paintings brings a warmth and light to my paintings. Finally, Indian, and Walnut Ink and a liquid gouache are used as a final layer to give definition.
