Where Shall We Go..? Print

Rabbits In Teacups Print

Jemma Banks Design is a creation of illustrations developed into giclée prints, greeting cards, children’s books and fabric bunting. I love to sell products that people will treasure and take joy from.
When I am developing a print, I will seek to capture a particular emotion from this illustration. Whether that is sentiment, happiness, or nostalgia, I hope to create a personal connection between the product and the customer.

My inspiration stems from a love of children’s illustration, in particular the personalities of characters portrayed in Children’s picture books. A great example that I feel is so cleverly illustrated is Axel Sheffler's Gruffalo. The character is initially seen as terrifying, but can be manipulated so easily into becoming a cute and cuddly character.

Designs are developed using a combination of gouache and digital media. The main body of colour for my illustrations is created using gouache. These are then scanned in and all the detailing/editing is done using Photoshop. I use these mediums as I have the flexibility of working digitally in order to create precise imagery, whereby I can manipulate the composition easily. Using gouache as a texture enables me to retain a soft, painterly feel towards the illustrations. Therefore I can portray these as cute, contemporary images, whilst displaying a hint of traditional methods. Images are bursting with whimsical characters and delicate patterns and incorporate a signature soft colour palette.
