Biography

Mission and Vision
I am passionate about making beauty from discarded materials. In my painting I seek to draw out the natural beauty found in old fragments of wood. I want to make images that resonate, that is, which enable the viewer to recall memories. Many of the paintings are of birds in flight, indicating the life journey we all make. With the beads, these are again made from waste materials, in this case egg boxes. In my beadmaking courses I want to enable others to share in the joy and satisfaction that creating something together can give.

inspiration

Inspiration
I am inspired by the movement, energy, textures, shapes and colours found in nature.
Onward movement is something I am constantly drawn to. I love the challenge of simplification, something I learnt in my background as a textile designer, and with that comes the task of trying to sort out how to express complex scenes in a simple way.
I also draw inspiration from the past, finding the gentle beauty of ancient fresco an ongoing excitement. I seek to express a glimpse into what I would like to call eternity in the present. This style is reflected in the beads I make, another aspect of the wider journey.

medium

Media
As part of the action to mitigate climate crisis I try to use only sustainable materials. My paintings are done on old fence panel fragments, and these are deliberately unframed so as to minimize the use of fossil based ingredients. Instead they are mounted on MDF, this gives a freedom from boundaries which is not found with frames.
With the same idea in mind I use a recipe based on natural materials consisting of paper pulp to make the beads. I like to devise crafts which can be carried out using common everyday items so that people can easily share in the excitement of creativity, whether in a group or on their own.
